You may not have heard of the grape Plavac Mali, but it’s actually the most widely planted grape varietal in Croatia! It’s a cross between ancestral Zinfandel and an ancient Croatian varietal called Dobričić. The name, adorably, translates to Little Blue, named after the tiny blue grapes that grow on the vines. We get notes of dark berries, cherries, and plum with a touch of black pepper, smoke, and spice. The tannins are not shy right off the bat, so we like to give it around 30 minutes of air, after which it transforms into a juicy, fresh, fruit-driven red wine. Somehow both soft and pleasantly rustic.
